Increased thefts of Range Rovers/Land Rovers

If you own a Land Rover or a Range Rover valued over £25,000 you may see your Insurance Company increasing the theft excess. Why you may ask?

The number of Land Rover’s being stolen in the UK is continuing to increase. According to Aviva, their Commercial Motor account has found that out of the overall number of vehicles they insure. Only 5% of this is land rovers but it equates to 40% of their theft claims across this product line.

Home office figures have highlighted a 50% rise in the last 5 years. Why is this happening as technology has provided more sophisticated electronic security devices? Thieves are exploiting passive keyless entry systems with a technique called “Relay Attack”. They capture the signal from the Key fob allowing the vehicle to be unlocked and stolen within minutes.

Security Companies like Thatcham are working to try research and prevent this from happening. We have some good ideas from the Loss Prevention Standards on how to protect your vehicle. If you would like a copy please contact us however in the meantime here are some preventative measures to keep your vehicle secure:

  • Keep all keys in a secure location and not near windows and doors.

  • Consider a signal blocking pouch (Faraday Bag) to store your keys including Spare keys when the vehicle is not in use.

  • speak to the manufacturer or looking in the handbook about to turn off the wireless signal.

As always, any further physical security will protect your property, locking your vehicle in a locked compound or garage will always help. Installing wheel clamps, steering locks, and parking bollards.
